On the way from Blatten bei Naters to Belalp via Holzji, you reach Egga about halfway along the route, which has an extraordinary location. The settlement nestles like a swallow's nest in a gentle semicircle on the eastern "shore" of a now marshy Ice Age hanging lake. A village lane, bordered uphill by residential houses and opposite by utility buildings, leads to an elongated square with a fountain. Almost half of the houses were built in the second half of the 16th century.
The further path leads past the mountain guide's hut towards Holzji, where there is a wildlife observation post. It is worth stopping here, and with a bit of luck you may even catch a glimpse of the native fauna.
The partially steep ascent is rewarded at the latest upon arrival at the Aletschbord, as here you have not only a view of the Great Aletsch Glacier but also of the Valais mountain panorama up to the Matterhorn.
